Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has been named the best children’s hospital in California, and the US News & World Report Honor Roll included it among the best in the nation for clinical excellence. CHLA is home to The Saban Research Institute, one of the largest and most productive pediatric research facilities in the United States. The hospital is also one of America’s premier teaching hospitals through its affiliation, since 1932, with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
“We are pleased that we continue to be recognized as one of the top pediatric facilities in the nation. When we began the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion new hospital building project, we turned to T2 Tech to architect, design and manage the enterprise integrated services implementation for the $636 million, 460,000 square foot patient facility. T2 Tech’s ability to meet the complex requirements and aggressive project timeline was a critical success factor for this four-year project.”—Marty Miller, Chief Information Officer, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
The Challenge: A Need For Efficiently Managed Resources
When CHLA embarked upon the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion new hospital building project, a 460,000 square foot patient facility with a budget of $636 million, CHLA needed to efficiently manage their limited personnel with a mix of operational and project-based responsibilities. In order to ensure that pressing construction deadlines were met and patient care was not impacted at existing facilities, CHLA turned to T2 Tech Group™ for assistance.
Vendor Negotiation
T2 Tech’s management of the hospital’s IT infrastructure and our vendor and competitive bidding process saved the hospital nearly $1.5 million in capital cost and $500,000 in operating costs.
Operations Management
T2 Tech provided day-to-day management of CHLA IT staff and vendor resources to ensure the successful completion of operational and project-based responsibilities.
Enterprise IS Integration
T2 Tech managed the redesign, renovation and integration of IT infrastructure in multiple CHLA facilities.
Design implementation
T2 Tech managed the design and implementation of wired/wireless network infrastructure, redundant wide area network (WAN) infrastructure, high-capacity storage and backup, Voice over IP (VoIP), virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and single sign-on (SSO) for the new facility.
T2 Tech Provides Dedicated And Experienced Management
To successfully manage both CHLA staff and vendor personnel, T2 Tech assigned a dedicated senior management resource on-site to oversee day-to-day operations for the duration of the two-year project. During this time, T2 Tech utilized their agile-based project management methodology to ensure that CHLA staff and vendor resources were at peak operational efficiency. This approach included two-week “Sprints” that clearly defined deliverables and deadlines while continually monitoring the project’s progress.
Efficient Management Leads To Productive Results
T2 Tech’s management of CHLA staff and vendor resources was critical to the project’s success. After implementing T2 Tech’s project management methodology and adhering to biweekly Sprints, CHLA staff and vendor partners executed tasks more efficiently and effectively balanced diversified workloads. This approach ultimately led to a successful opening of the new hospital on schedule without adding any additional fulltime employees (FTEs) to support this monumental initiative. In addition to managing operations, T2 Tech managed the redesign and implementation of the hospital’s new IT infrastructure. As a part of this effort, T2 Tech’s vendor and competitive bidding process saved CHLA $1.5 million in capital costs and $500,000 in ongoing maintenance costs on this effort alone.
